What is Pilates?

The Pilates Method:

It was developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates.  Joseph was born in Germany with numerous childhood illnesses including rickets, rheumatic fever and asthma.  His parents were informed that he had a very short life expectancy.  He proved everyone wrong and after many years of body building, gymnastics and boxing he built up his body strength to a fine physique. Over his life Joseph developed an exercise method he named Contrology. In 1926 Joseph decided to emigrate to America.  He opened a Fitness Studio and taught Contrology for many years. Unfortunately, in 1967 he died, however, his exercise method continued to grow and was renamed Pilates.

The Benefits of Pilates

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. In order to achieve happiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body. If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young."   Joseph Pilates
